Saab Wins $900 Million Deal to Supply Combat Systems for German MEKO A-200 FleetGerman shipbuilder TKMS has selected Saab to deliver integrated combat systems and mission-critical technologies for four next-generation MEKO A-200 DEU frigates under a contract valued at 8.7 billion Swedish kronor ($900 million). The agreement supports Germany’s naval modernization strategy and includes an option to extend deliveries to four additional warships. Between 2029 and 2032, Saab will provide its 9LV Combat System featuring advanced combat management and fire control capabilities, Sea Giraffe 4A Fixed Face and Sea Giraffe 1X radar systems, passive sensors, and composite superstructures that reduce weight while enhancing operational performance. The award follows Germany’s approval of a €6.3 billion procurement program for the initial frigates after replacing the delayed F126 project with the more mature MEKO A-200 DEU platform. Built around a modular design, the frigate is optimized for anti-submarine warfare while supporting a broad range of naval missions through flexible payload configurations. Measuring 121 meters in length, the vessel accommodates helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, mission modules, and fast boats for patrol and combat support operations. With a top speed exceeding 29 knots and an operational range of over 6,500 nautical miles, the MEKO A-200 DEU will provide the German Navy with a modern, versatile surface combatant capable of meeting evolving maritime security requirements while incorporating state-of-the-art European combat technologies.
