Canada is expanding the strike capability of its future fifth-generation fighter force through the procurement of Kongsberg’s Joint Strike Missile (JSM), providing the Royal Canadian Air Force with an advanced stand-off precision weapon optimized for the F-35 Lightning II. Specifically engineered for internal carriage, the missile preserves the aircraft’s stealth characteristics while enabling precision engagement against heavily defended maritime and land targets. The JSM incorporates sophisticated navigation, autonomous target recognition, terrain-following flight profiles, and imaging infrared guidance to penetrate modern integrated air defense environments. Its acquisition complements Canada’s ongoing F-35 modernization program and significantly enhances long-range precision engagement capability while improving interoperability with allied nations already fielding the weapon. The missile provides Canadian forces with greater operational flexibility across maritime security, coalition operations, and future high-intensity combat scenarios.
