The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded contracts worth 3.14 million pounds to Frankenberg Technologies, Greenjets, and Cambridge Aerospace to develop affordable interceptor systems capable of defeating low-cost unmanned aerial threats. The initiative, conducted under the Low Cost Air Defence Effectors (LCADE) program, focuses on creating cost-efficient interception technologies that can counter the growing challenge posed by mass-produced drones without relying on expensive surface-to-air missiles. The selected companies will design, manufacture, and test prototype interceptor solutions while expanding domestic production capabilities across multiple regions in the United Kingdom. LCADE forms part of the broader multinational Low Cost Effectors and Autonomous Platforms (LEAP) program involving the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland, encouraging collaborative innovation in autonomous defence technologies. The program also integrates artificial intelligence, rapid manufacturing techniques, and lessons learned from recent battlefield experiences involving large-scale drone warfare. By promoting faster development cycles and scalable production targeted from 2027 onward, the initiative aims to strengthen both national air defence capabilities and Europe’s wider industrial defence ecosystem while creating new opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises involved in advanced aerospace manufacturing.
