Lockheed Martin’s Polish subsidiary PZL Mielec has initiated production of two Sikorsky S-70 Firehawk helicopters destined for Czechia, marking an important milestone in European emergency aviation capability. Based on the proven Black Hawk platform, the Firehawk incorporates specialized aerial firefighting equipment including a large-capacity water tank, retractable snorkel, twin-engine propulsion, and advanced night operation capability. Once delivered, the aircraft will become part of the European Union’s RescEU emergency response pool, supporting multinational disaster relief operations during wildfires, floods, and other natural emergencies. Production involves close collaboration between PZL Mielec, Czech aerospace partner CLS, and United Rotorcraft, which will integrate firefighting equipment, provide crew training, and deliver long-term maintenance support. The project demonstrates growing European cooperation in specialized emergency aviation while expanding the operational use of military-derived aircraft for civilian disaster response missions.
