Belgium is accelerating the modernization of its integrated air and missile defense network by moving forward with the acquisition of ten NASAMS batteries through a cooperative procurement arrangement with the Netherlands. The purchase is intended to establish a robust short- and medium-range defense capability capable of countering aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and increasingly sophisticated unmanned aerial threats. Developed jointly by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Raytheon, NASAMS integrates distributed command-and-control architecture, advanced Sentinel radars, electro-optical tracking systems, and networked launchers capable of firing AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9X interceptors. The acquisition represents an important step in Belgium’s broader national defense modernization strategy, which seeks to establish a layered air defense architecture capable of protecting military bases, transportation hubs, ports, government infrastructure, and industrial facilities. By leveraging the Netherlands’ procurement program, Belgium also improves interoperability, logistics compatibility, and operational cooperation within NATO while reducing acquisition timelines and support costs.
