The United Kingdom and Australia are exploring a new defense technology partnership that could lead to the integration of Australian-developed radar technology into UK military systems. A statement of intent signed in Canberra brings together the UK Ministry of Defence, Australia’s Department of Defence, British defense technology company QinetiQ, and Australian radar specialist CEA Technologies. The initiative is focused on active electronically scanned array, or AESA, radar technology. Unlike traditional mechanically scanned radars, AESA systems use electronically controlled beams to detect and track targets without requiring the antenna to physically move. This technology can provide military forces with enhanced surveillance capabilities and the ability to track multiple targets simultaneously. Under the proposed cooperation, CEA Technologies would provide its domestically developed radar technology, while QinetiQ would support its integration, testing, and technical assurance for potential use within the UK defense sector. The arrangement could allow the two countries to combine Australian radar technology with British expertise in system integration and evaluation. CEA’s radar systems are already operated by the Australian Defence Force. They have been deployed aboard Anzac-class frigates and incorporated into land-based air-defense systems, giving the technology an established operational background within Australia. The UK-Australia initiative is part of broader efforts to deepen defense-industrial cooperation between the two countries. The agreement was signed during UK Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard’s week-long visit to Australia and New Zealand. His visit focused on defense production, supply chains, maritime capabilities, and industrial cooperation across the wider Indo-Pacific region. During his time in Canberra, Pollard held discussions with Australian officials covering critical minerals and closer coordination between the countries’ defense industries. He is also expected to visit the Henderson shipyard in Western Australia, a strategically important location associated with Australia’s growing defense-industrial and AUKUS submarine capabilities. The cooperation on radar technology could contribute to broader efforts to strengthen interoperability between British and Australian defense systems. AESA radars are relevant to a wide range of missions, including air surveillance, missile defense, maritime monitoring, and target tracking. The ability to integrate proven radar technology into different platforms can also help reduce development timelines compared with designing an entirely new system. The initiative demonstrates the growing importance of bilateral defense technology cooperation as both countries seek resilient supply chains and stronger industrial capabilities. It also reflects the broader strategic relationship between London and Canberra, which includes cooperation under AUKUS and other defense programs. By combining CEA’s radar technology with QinetiQ’s integration and assurance capabilities, the partnership could provide a pathway for Australian-developed sensing technologies to enter wider UK defense applications.
