L3Harris has introduced Wraith Shield, a software-based upgrade that transforms tactical radios into AI-enabled counter-drone sensing systems capable of detecting small aerial threats through radio frequency analysis. The technology enables existing communications equipment to function as distributed sensing nodes connected to a shared battlefield network, allowing soldiers to contribute to a layered air defense picture without requiring separate hardware systems. According to the company, Wraith Shield is the first radio-sensing solution capable of integrating directly into distributed operational networks. The capability is supported by DataShapes AI’s GlobalEdge visualization software, which processes electromagnetic spectrum data locally at the tactical edge without cloud dependence. By classifying RF signals from nearby devices and displaying them in real time, the system helps troops identify and respond to potential drone threats. Wraith Shield will initially be deployed on RF-9820S Compact Team Radios and later integrated into RF-9820S-ER variants, while also supporting more than 100,000 legacy Wraith-compatible radios already fielded globally.
