Saab UK has received a £1.8 million contract from the UK’s Defence Equipment and Support organization to provide continued logistics support for the Giraffe 1X radar. The agreement covers a range of services intended to keep the radar systems operational and available for frontline missions. The package includes equipment support, training, technical helpdesk services, and spare parts. Initial performance is planned between July 2, 2026, and March 31, 2027, while the UK has an option to extend the contract through March 2030.The direct award reflects Saab’s unique position as the Giraffe 1X manufacturer and design authority. The company also controls proprietary information and intellectual property required for specialized maintenance and technical assistance.Britain has been expanding its Giraffe 1X inventory since placing its first order for 11 systems in 2023. Additional systems were ordered in April 2026, reflecting growing demand for mobile short-range surveillance capabilities. The Giraffe 1X is a lightweight 3D active electronically scanned array radar designed to identify and track aerial and surface targets. Its weight of under 150 kilograms allows it to be deployed on lightweight platforms or temporary installations. The radar can monitor low-level threats such as unmanned aircraft, helicopters, and slow-moving aircraft. It can also support counter-drone missions and detect threats associated with rockets, artillery, and mortars. Its mobility and small operating footprint make the system particularly useful for forward units and critical military sites. Saab’s UK manufacturing and support activities in Fareham further strengthen the company’s ability to provide radar-related services to the British defense sector.
