South Korea has taken a significant step toward advancing its air and missile defense architecture with Hanwha Systems winning a major contract to develop the Cheongung-III multi-function radar. The AESA-based sensor will act as the system’s central “eyes,” coordinating real-time threat detection and interception. Designed to support higher-altitude coverage and simultaneous tracking of multiple threats, the radar strengthens Korea’s medium-range defense layer and builds on Hanwha’s experience with AESA radars for L-SAM, KF-21 fighters, and advanced naval combatants. The program also benefits from the export momentum of Cheongung-II, reinforcing Korea’s position as a competitive air-defense supplier.
