Lockheed Martin Canada has awarded Thales Canada a contract to provide the advanced S2087 anti-submarine warfare sonar system for the Royal Canadian Navy’s future River-class destroyers. The system, part of the widely used CAPTAS family of towed-array sonars, is designed to detect and track underwater threats at long distances in both coastal and open-ocean environments. By integrating the S2087, Canada will significantly enhance its anti-submarine warfare capabilities and improve its ability to monitor increasingly contested maritime regions. The sonar system is already operational aboard British Type 23 frigates and is expected to equip future Type 26 warships, while Australia has also selected it for its Hunter-class frigates. With Canada joining the program, the system will be operated by three members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, improving interoperability and shared operational capabilities. Thales has also committed to working closely with Canadian industry to ensure long-term maintenance, support, and upgrade activities remain under domestic control. The contract represents another important milestone in Canada’s largest naval modernization effort and reinforces the country’s commitment to strengthening maritime security through advanced sensing technologies.
