Poland has finalized a $4.8-billion agreement with Sweden to procure three Saab submarines under its Orka modernization program, significantly strengthening the country’s naval capabilities amid growing regional security concerns. Deliveries are scheduled between 2031 and 2038, while Sweden will provide a modernized A-17 submarine from next year to support crew training. The agreement also covers logistics, infrastructure development, industrial cooperation, and the acquisition of a rescue vessel from Polish shipyards. Expected to generate thousands of jobs in both countries, the contract represents a major milestone in bilateral defense collaboration and replaces Poland’s aging Soviet-era submarine fleet.
