The US Navy has committed $76.6 billion in new contract modifications to expand production of its next-generation nuclear submarine fleet. General Dynamics Electric Boat received $29.5 billion for five additional Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines and $42.1 billion for nine Block VI Virginia-class attack submarines, along with funding to expand supporting shipyard infrastructure. Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding will deliver six of the nine Virginia-class submarines and produce six module sections for every Columbia-class boat. The work will be distributed across multiple US facilities and is expected to continue through 2038. The Columbia-class program is central to the Navy’s plan to replace aging Ohio-class submarines and preserve the sea-based leg of the US nuclear deterrent. Virginia-class submarines will replace Los Angeles-class vessels and provide capabilities spanning anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, land attack, ISR, and special operations support. The investment marks a major step in expanding submarine production capacity while strengthening the US Navy’s long-term undersea warfare and strategic deterrence capabilities.
