Bharat Forge Limited’s contract with the Ministry of Defence for supplying 12 indigenous 1.25 MW Marine Gas Turbine Generators represents a major advancement in India’s naval power-generation ecosystem. The ₹425 crore programme will provide improved auxiliary electrical generation capability for Kolkata-class destroyers while supporting long-term requirements of modern combat systems. Unlike propulsion turbines responsible for ship movement, these generators are designed to supply electricity for radar networks, sonar systems, electronic warfare equipment, communication systems, combat management suites, and advanced weapon technologies. The new gas turbine generators offer higher power density, reduced weight, faster load response, and greater efficiency compared with conventional diesel-based systems. The increased electrical capacity will also create opportunities for integrating future high-energy systems such as directed energy weapons, advanced sensors, and next-generation electronic warfare platforms. The programme strengthens India’s indigenous manufacturing capability in critical naval engineering fields and supports future ambitions in developing larger turbine-based power solutions.
