At its Shimonoseki yard, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has unveiled a new research ship for the Japanese Navy, called JS Akashi (AGS-5107).
The vessel will carry out in-depth ocean surveys, analyzing seafloor structures, marine temperatures, and underwater resources to aid strategic planning and science.
The name “Akashi” pays tribute to a defense production hotspot in Hyogo Prefecture that contributed heavily during WWII.
