Spain has officially authorized the contracting process with Navantia for two state-of-the-art Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM) offshore patrol vessels, marking a new chapter in the modernization of the Spanish Navy. With a budget allocation of 716 million euros ($847 million), the project underscores Spain’s strategic focus on strengthening its maritime defense posture and sustaining high levels of readiness. The new BAM ships will complement six vessels currently in service, but with significant advancements over earlier versions. Enhancements will include an upgraded combat system, enhanced cybersecurity measures, and modernized navigation and communications suites. For crew welfare, the design incorporates more spacious accommodations, medical facilities, and optimized work environments. Equipped to operate with unmanned vehicles and integrated with future-ready sensors, the vessels will be more versatile in multi-mission operations ranging from counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics to environmental protection and humanitarian assistance. Construction will take place at Navantia’s technologically advanced Puerto Real facilities, using digital design tools under the ELCANO program for faster, more efficient shipbuilding. Work is set to commence in the first half of 2027. By investing in these upgraded patrol vessels, Spain is simultaneously advancing its naval readiness, supporting the domestic defense industry, and demonstrating commitment to NATO maritime security objectives.
