Norway has confirmed it will activate its option for two additional Type 212CD submarines from thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, raising its planned fleet from four to six boats. The expansion nearly doubles the cost of the joint German-Norwegian program to about 100 billion kroner and aligns with concerns over increased Russian submarine activity in the High North. Originally, four Norwegian submarines were budgeted at 46 billion kroner under a 2021 contract. Rising defense costs and exchange-rate pressures push the updated total to nearly 100 billion kroner. Deliveries will begin in 2029 and run into the mid-2030s, ensuring continuous capability renewal for the Royal Norwegian Navy.
