Berlin and New Delhi are exploring a strategic $8-billion agreement for six conventional submarines, designed by Germany and built locally in India. The vessels, equipped with air-independent propulsion, would enhance underwater endurance for India’s aging conventional fleet. Engineering and design input would be provided by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, with Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders handling construction. Although finalization is unlikely during Chancellor Merz’s visit, discussions emphasize industrial collaboration, facilitated by Germany’s recent relaxation of export restrictions. The project supports India’s ongoing naval modernization alongside its nuclear submarine program and underscores the deepening bilateral defense partnership.
