Seoul is moving forward with an ambitious nuclear-powered submarine program aimed at boosting the South Korean Navy’s long-term underwater combat capabilities. The submarines are expected to be built domestically, marking a major milestone for the country’s defense and nuclear industries. The initiative gained momentum after Washington reportedly approved access to restricted nuclear fuel technologies as part of a broader bilateral agreement. Nuclear-powered submarines would provide South Korea with improved endurance, stealth, and operational reach compared to conventional diesel-electric platforms, significantly strengthening maritime deterrence in the region.
