Canada has chosen Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to lead one of the country’s most ambitious naval modernization programs. The project will replace the Royal Canadian Navy’s aging Victoria-class submarines with a new generation of advanced underwater platforms designed for surveillance, intelligence collection, maritime security, and deterrence operations. Ottawa will now negotiate exclusively with TKMS before moving toward a final agreement that could reshape Canada’s naval capabilities for decades. The decision also demonstrates Canada’s growing commitment to strengthening defense cooperation with European NATO allies while expanding domestic industrial participation. Alongside improving operational capability, the submarine program is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits through technology transfer, skilled employment, and long-term maintenance support, reinforcing Canada’s strategic position within the alliance.
