The German Armed Forces have awarded a €4.2-billion ($4.92-billion) contract to the Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland joint venture for the delivery of 200 Puma infantry fighting vehicles, reinforcing Berlin’s long-term commitment to modernizing its armored infantry formations. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in mid-2028 and will incorporate the MELLS anti-tank guided missile system, the European adaptation of Rafael’s Spike LR missile. Manufactured through a joint venture involving Rafael, Diehl, and Rheinmetall, the Spike LR provides a range of up to 4 kilometers, while the newer Spike LR2 extends reach by an additional 1.5 kilometers and introduces a tandem high-explosive warhead capable of defeating modern main battle tanks, armored platforms, and selected maritime targets. The missile’s ability to conduct urban engagements, including in-structure detonations, significantly broadens the Puma’s operational flexibility. Integration of MELLS enables beyond-visual-range engagements, enhancing survivability and lethality. The Puma, widely regarded as one of the most advanced IFVs globally, carries a three-person crew and six dismounted troops, features modular protection, and is optimized for network-centric warfare. This contract builds on a parallel modernization program for 297 Puma IFVs approved in 2023–2024, with upgrades running through 2029.
