Romania has chosen Rheinmetall’s Lynx infantry fighting vehicles as part of a major defense procurement valued at approximately €2.6 billion. The deal includes 232 tracked vehicles funded through the European Union’s SAFE initiative, with an additional 66 units expected to be acquired later via national funding. The procurement is currently awaiting parliamentary approval and represents Romania’s largest acquisition under the SAFE framework. Deliveries are projected to take place over an eight-year period once the contract is finalized. This acquisition is part of Romania’s broader effort to strengthen its military capabilities in response to evolving regional security challenges, particularly following the conflict in Ukraine. Competing platforms included the CV90, K21 Redback, and ASCOD 2, but the Lynx KF41 was ultimately selected. The vehicle offers a modular architecture, allowing rapid reconfiguration for different mission roles. It weighs around 50 tonnes and accommodates a crew of three along with up to eight soldiers. Powered by a high-performance engine, it reaches speeds of up to 65 km/h. The KF41 is equipped with a Lance 2.0 turret featuring a 35mm cannon and can integrate various advanced systems, including missiles, electronic warfare tools, and unmanned aerial platforms. Its layered protection combines active, passive, and reactive systems to defend against modern threats. The platform can be adapted for multiple roles such as combat, reconnaissance, command, and medical evacuation.
