Taiwan is moving forward with a new indigenous reconnaissance vehicle intended to strengthen battlefield surveillance and tactical mobility. Under the Iron Cavalry Project, 246 vehicles are expected to enter production from 2028 through 2033. The platform will complement the army’s Humvee fleet and support reconnaissance, security, and counterattack missions. Taiwan’s Armaments Bureau is managing the program, while local research organizations are responsible for key technologies, including mobility systems and electro-optical sensors. Powered by a 205-horsepower engine, the four-wheel-drive vehicle can reach a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour and travel around 500 kilometers. Its telescopic mast carries an electro-optical sensor capable of detecting activity at ranges of up to 12 kilometers. A remotely controlled 12.7 mm weapon station adds protection and fire-support capability. The vehicle is being developed as Taiwan strengthens its ability to maintain military operations during a potential prolonged crisis, including through more resilient defense production and logistics networks.
