The T-90 represents Russia’s effort to modernize the proven T-72 design rather than develop an entirely new main battle tank. Introduced in the early 1990s, the third-generation platform combines a 125mm smoothbore cannon, automatic loading system, layered armor protection and progressively upgraded electronics. Over the years, the T-90 family has expanded to include variants such as the T-90S export model, T-90A and the modern T-90M Proryv. The latest T-90M features Relikt explosive reactive armor, an upgraded 125mm gun, digital fire-control systems, panoramic commander sights, improved communications and enhanced crew protection. The tank’s compact design and three-person crew provide mobility and logistical advantages, while its relatively low weight has supported widespread international use. However, the T-90 retains vulnerabilities inherited from its Soviet-era architecture, particularly ammunition storage inside the crew compartment. Combat experience in Ukraine has also highlighted the growing threat posed by drones, top-attack weapons and modern anti-tank systems, increasing pressure for further protection and counter-drone upgrades.
