The US Army has awarded AM General an $82.2 million firm-fixed-price indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for additional High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles, widely known as Humvees. The latest award increases the contract’s cumulative value to approximately $754.6 million.Work locations and funding will be established as individual orders are issued, while the overall contract is scheduled to run through August 2028. The procurement demonstrates that the Army continues to require HMMWVs for certain missions even as it transitions toward newer tactical mobility platforms. The Army has continued ordering upgraded Humvees in recent years. In September 2025, AM General received a $50.9 million contract modification for 224 vehicles, following a $126.5 million order in July for M1165A1B3 variants. The HMMWV program dates back to 1983, when the Army awarded AM General its initial production contract for 55,000 vehicles. More than 280,000 Humvees had been manufactured by 2012, making the platform one of the most widely recognized US military vehicles.Replacement efforts are already underway. In 2023, the Army selected AM General for an $8.66 billion follow-on production contract for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle. The agreement covers as many as 20,682 JLTVs and 9,883 trailers, supporting the gradual replacement of older HMMWVs in demanding roles. The Army is also examining commercially derived vehicles for less demanding missions and has introduced the Infantry Squad Vehicle for certain infantry formations. Despite these modernization efforts, the Humvee remains relevant because of its adaptability and extensive operational history.Depending on its configuration, the four-wheel-drive vehicle can carry up to six personnel and can be equipped with machine guns, grenade launchers and anti-tank weapons.
