Finland has signed a government-to-government agreement with South Korea to acquire an additional 112 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers, further strengthening its long-range artillery capabilities. The deal, valued at approximately €546.8 million, includes spare parts, tools, and testing equipment, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. This procurement builds on Finland’s earlier acquisitions of the Hanwha Aerospace-manufactured system, bringing its total fleet to over 200 units. The K9 Thunder is a 155mm/52-caliber artillery system capable of delivering precision fires at ranges exceeding 40 kilometers, offering both mobility and firepower. The new units will replace aging towed artillery systems and enhance the Finnish Army’s operational flexibility. The acquisition also supports domestic sustainment capabilities, as Finland has already established maintenance infrastructure for the platform. With this order, Finland joins Turkey and Poland as NATO members operating large K9 fleets, highlighting the system’s widespread adoption across the alliance.
