Poland has strengthened its military modernization program by signing a contract worth approximately $2.07 billion with a consortium led by the Polish Armaments Group and Huta Stalowa Wola for the procurement of 146 additional Borsuk Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs). This latest agreement follows a previous order for 111 Borsuk vehicles signed in March 2025 and forms part of a broader defense acquisition package valued at around $16.5 billion. The larger procurement initiative also includes Krab self-propelled howitzers, Rak self-propelled mortars, and support vehicles for Homar-K multiple rocket launchers. The acquisition will be financed through the European Union’s SAFE loan mechanism, reflecting Warsaw’s commitment to rapidly expanding its defense capabilities. Once delivered, Poland’s Borsuk fleet will reach 257 vehicles, sufficient to equip four mechanized infantry battalions while supporting reserve and training requirements. Originally developed to replace aging Soviet-era BMP-1 vehicles, the Borsuk offers enhanced mobility, protection, and firepower. Equipped with an unmanned turret, advanced fire-control systems, a 30mm cannon, machine gun, and optional anti-tank missiles, the platform is designed to meet the challenges of modern mechanized warfare. Poland’s long-term requirement has grown substantially due to lessons from the war in Ukraine, with plans now calling for over 1,400 variants and specialized vehicles.
