The Polish military has taken delivery of 28 K2 Black Panther tanks, representing the first shipment from a major follow-on agreement with Hyundai Rotem. The contract, signed in 2025, is worth approximately 9 trillion South Korean won.With the latest batch, Poland now has 208 K2 tanks in service. The fleet previously consisted of 180 vehicles purchased under the country’s first K2 agreement in 2022.The new vehicles are expected to strengthen the 16th Mechanized Division, which has responsibility for areas close to Poland’s borders with Belarus and Russia. Its location makes modern armored capabilities an important part of NATO’s eastern-flank defense.Under the latest arrangement, Poland will receive 180 more tanks. The initial 116 K2GF vehicles will be delivered through 2027, while 64 K2PL versions will follow from 2028 to 2030.The program goes beyond tank acquisition. Poland is also receiving 81 K2-based support vehicles covering bridge-laying, recovery, and engineering functions.A local industrial capability will support the program. Bumar-Łabędy is expected to participate in the final assembly of 61 K2PL vehicles and integrate selected Polish equipment.The K2PL configuration will feature modifications such as additional side protection, counter-UAS equipment, and an active protection system.The expansion is part of Warsaw’s wider effort to rebuild and modernize its armored forces after transferring large quantities of older equipment to Ukraine.Poland’s long-term objective is to build a fleet approaching 900 modern tanks by combining K2s with M1A2 Abrams and Leopard 2 vehicles. This would place the country among Europe’s leading operators of modern armored warfare platforms.
