Latvia is set to enhance its defense industry with a major agreement to establish a modern ammunition production facility in collaboration with a leading European defense firm. The facility will produce a substantial number of artillery shells annually and is designed to integrate regional suppliers while fostering local workforce development. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, with initial production slated about a year later. The plant will feature a full production chain, including forging, filling, testing, and quality assurance, creating numerous local jobs and ensuring domestic supply chain resilience. The joint venture arrangement ensures both parties contribute to operations, with a majority share held by the foreign partner and the remainder by Latvia’s defense corporation. This initiative aligns with broader European efforts to strengthen self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing, reduce reliance on imports, and provide a secure supply for partner nations.
