India has achieved a significant defense manufacturing milestone with the delivery of the 1000th indigenously produced T-90(IM) tank by Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited to the Indian Army. Manufactured at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi, the T-90(IM) program has evolved from licensed assembly into a deeply localized production effort that now incorporates approximately 80 percent indigenous content. AVNL has progressively localized critical systems such as electrical architectures, cooling assemblies, complex LRUs, and upgraded propulsion systems while integrating advanced indigenous engineering solutions. The program also includes the introduction of locally developed 1,350 hp engines intended to modernize the armored fleet and improve operational performance. The T-90 Bhishma remains one of the Indian Army’s most important frontline armored platforms, forming the spearhead of India’s mechanized warfare capability alongside legacy T-72 tanks and the domestically developed Arjun MBT. Defense officials believe the milestone strengthens India’s long-term operational independence by ensuring local maintenance, upgrades, spare support, and modernization capabilities for its armored corps. The achievement is also viewed as a major boost to India’s indigenous defense ecosystem and manufacturing supply chain.
