L3Harris Technologies has secured a major $2.26 billion defense contract to deliver modified Bombardier Global 6500 airborne early‑warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). The deal, revealed in October 2025, unites L3Harris with Bombardier, Israel Aerospace Industries’ ELTA Systems, and Korean Air under a multinational effort to modernize South Korea’s intelligence and command capabilities. The new Global 6500 AEW&C jets are engineered to offer enhanced airborne surveillance, radar range, and operational endurance compared with earlier platforms. They will be capable of longer missions at higher altitudes, improving both response time and crew safety against evolving threats in regional airspace. According to L3Harris CEO Christopher Kubasik, the aircraft will integrate “combat‑proven radar” and a secure communications suite compatible with U.S., NATO, and allied networks—helping create a fully connected battlespace with fifth‑generation fighters and future systems. Korean Air will support integration and long‑term sustainment while building local technical capacity for mission system maintenance and production. This partnership pushes South Korea toward self‑reliance in advanced military‑aircraft support and upgrades. Two of the aircraft will be built and integrated in the United States, while the other two will be assembled and modified domestically by Korean Air. Deliveries are expected between 2030 and 2032, adding to South Korea’s existing Boeing E‑7 Wedgetail fleet. The project marks a decisive step for the Republic of Korea’s defense modernization amid rising regional tensions, strengthening its surveillance coverage across the Indo‑Pacific. L3Harris’s selection followed a competitive process that included Saab’s GlobalEye offering. The ROKAF’s choice favored L3Harris due to its collaboration model and life‑cycle management plan, ensuring reliable upgrades through local industry partnerships. The Global 6500‑based system demonstrates how aerospace integration and digital networking continue to transform modern warfare, emphasizing interoperability and long‑term resilience. For South Korea, the acquisition represents both a technological milestone and a strategic message of preparedness in an increasingly contested region.
