India’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment has initiated a program to develop an indigenous High Energy Ignition system for advanced fighter engines. The system plays a crucial role in ensuring reliable engine performance, particularly under extreme conditions such as high-altitude relight and cold starts. The initiative seeks an industry partner to design, manufacture, and certify the ignition unit and associated components. Using capacitor-discharge technology, the system generates high-energy sparks essential for combustion in challenging environments. This development is critical for future platforms like AMCA and Tejas Mk2. It also addresses supply chain vulnerabilities highlighted in past operations by reducing reliance on foreign components. The project aligns with India’s broader strategy of achieving self-reliance in aero-engine technology and securing intellectual property ownership for critical subsystems.
