HAL has expressed confidence that the supply of GE F404-IN20 engines required for the Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft program will improve significantly in the coming months. According to HAL CMD Ravi Kota, the company has already received six engines from GE Aerospace and expects another 15 to 20 engines by the end of the year. The development marks an important turning point for the Tejas Mk1A project, which has experienced delays due to disruptions in global supply chains affecting engine manufacturing and deliveries. The Tejas Mk1A program forms part of a ₹46,898 crore contract signed for the supply of 83 fighter aircraft to the Indian Air Force. HAL indicated that the improved engine availability will help stabilize production activities and gradually increase aircraft assembly rates. While some engines are undergoing testing and integration procedures, others are still under validation as the company continues refining the aircraft platform. Defence analysts believe that the expected rise in engine deliveries could enable HAL to ramp up Tejas Mk1A production substantially over the next two financial years. The Indian Air Force considers the program critical for replacing aging MiG-series aircraft and strengthening its fighter squadron numbers. The Tejas Mk1A, equipped with advanced avionics and modern combat systems, is expected to play a central role in the future modernization of the IAF while supporting India’s broader push toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
