The US Department of Defense has awarded Pratt & Whitney a $3.8 billion contract to produce F135 engines for the F-35 Lightning II, reinforcing the backbone of the Joint Strike Fighter program. This contract finalizes production for Lot 18 engines while supporting additional manufacturing under Lot 19, bringing the total program value to approximately $6.6 billion. The F135 engine, derived from the F119 used in the F-22 Raptor, delivers exceptional thrust and performance, enabling the F-35 to achieve advanced combat capabilities. The agreement includes not only engine production but also spares, modules, engineering services, and technical support, ensuring sustained readiness across global fleets. With over 1,400 engines already delivered to more than 20 allied nations, the program plays a critical role in maintaining air superiority. The engine supports speeds up to Mach 1.6 and a range exceeding 1,300 nautical miles, making it a key component of fifth-generation warfare. The contract also contributes significantly to the US economy, supporting tens of thousands of jobs across multiple states. Completion is expected by 2028, with oversight by the Naval Air Systems Command. Overall, the deal underscores the importance of propulsion systems in sustaining advanced fighter operations worldwide.
