L3Harris Technologies has reached a new testing milestone for Viper Shield, completing its first flight involving two F-16 aircraft equipped with the electronic warfare system. The achievement moves the program closer to full-rate production for eight international customers.
The flight trials took place at Edwards Air Force Base, California, using an F-16C and an F-16D. The two aircraft operated together while fitted with Viper Shield hardware, allowing engineers to assess performance in a multi-aircraft environment.
According to the company, the trials demonstrated Viper Shield’s ability to detect, identify, and counter electromagnetic threats during realistic mission conditions. Engineers also examined how the system integrates with F-16 avionics and evaluated its digital architecture and real-time response across different electronic warfare scenarios.
The program is now moving toward larger-scale production. L3Harris expects 233 Viper Shield systems to be produced under current plans. With eight nations already selecting the system, the company is expanding its production line to meet international demand and support the next stage of the program.
