Northrop Grumman and Boeing have demonstrated automated crewed-uncrewed teaming between the MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft and the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. During the jointly funded demonstration, the two platforms exchanged maritime intelligence through a standardized machine-to-machine interface supported by artificial intelligence and open systems architecture. The high-altitude, long-endurance Triton responded to tasking from the crewed Poseidon, demonstrating how unmanned aircraft could automatically support maritime intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting and anti-surface warfare missions. The test used the Universal Command and Control Interface, which is based on Open Mission Systems and the Autonomy Government Reference Architecture. The standardized approach is designed to allow Triton to communicate with multiple compatible platforms while reducing the complexity and cost associated with integrating new systems. Such interoperability could enable operators to distribute missions across crewed and uncrewed assets more efficiently. Triton is already operated by the US Navy and Royal Australian Air Force and has also attracted interest from NATO. The demonstration represents another step toward increasingly networked maritime operations.
