Japan is considering transferring its retired Type 88 anti-ship missile systems to the Philippines following Manila’s reported interest in strengthening coastal defense capabilities. The truck-mounted missile, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, is being phased out from Japan Ground Self-Defense Force service as the newer Type 12 missile replaces it. Tokyo’s recent relaxation of defense export rules has opened the way for such transfers to partner nations, while cooperation with Manila is also expanding through planned deliveries of Abukuma-class destroyers and TC-90 patrol aircraft. With a range exceeding 100 kilometers and a 225-kilogram warhead, the Type 88 offers capabilities comparable to the US Harpoon missile and could significantly enhance Philippine maritime deterrence.
