India and France have intensified discussions over a proposed deal for 114 Rafale fighter jets for the Indian Air Force, with momentum building ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to India. The proposal, estimated at around $22 billion, seeks to address India’s declining fighter squadron strength. While the IAF submitted its request in 2023, the Ministry of Defence has pushed for greater clarity on local manufacturing, industrial participation, and indigenous content. Plans include establishing a domestic production line, engine manufacturing, and MRO facilities in India through partnerships with Dassault Aviation and Indian firms. If approved, the deal would significantly expand India’s Rafale fleet beyond the 36 aircraft currently in service.
