The SM‑2 Block IIIC/CU medium‑range surface‑to‑air missile was on display at SNA 2026, highlighting how the U.S. Navy is modernizing its long‑serving Standard Missile‑2 inventory. Known as the RIM‑66P, the missile replaces the traditional semi‑active seeker with a hybrid solution combining active and semi‑active RF guidance derived from the SM‑6 Block I.
This evolution allows ships to engage aerial threats with reduced reliance on continuous radar illumination, improving fire‑control flexibility and engagement density against cruise missiles and tactical aircraft. By retaining the existing propulsion system, dimensions, and launcher compatibility, the Navy has prioritized cost‑effective life extension while maintaining uninterrupted fleet air‑defense coverage.
