The US Army has awarded L3Harris a $65 million contract to manufacture rocket motors for the Army Tactical Missile System, reinforcing production of a key long-range strike weapon. The contract covers motors and associated hardware for ATACMS, including M124 rocket motors, igniters, and exit cones, with deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2028. ATACMS has served for decades as one of the Army’s primary deep-strike systems, capable of attacking high-value targets at long ranges. L3Harris stated that it remains focused on maintaining strong production output to meet both US military demand and growing international orders. The company has supported the missile program for more than 30 years, with major manufacturing centered at its Camden, Arkansas, site. That facility produces significant numbers of solid rocket motors each year and conducts thousands of hot-fire tests to ensure reliability and quality control. Additional missile components are built in Cincinnati, Ohio, where L3Harris manufactures arm-and-fire devices used during launch operations. Global demand for ATACMS has increased sharply in recent years. Ukraine has used US-supplied missiles for strikes against Russian positions, though reports in March indicated Kyiv had depleted available stocks. Taiwan also received its first ATACMS batch in late 2024 under an earlier order. In July 2024, Morocco, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland jointly placed orders worth $227 million for additional missiles. The latest contract underscores continuing relevance of ATACMS even as the US Army transitions toward newer Precision Strike Missile systems.
