Rheinmetall has announced plans to enter the cruise missile sector through a partnership with Dutch defense firm Destinus, marking a significant expansion of its capabilities in precision strike systems. Subject to regulatory approvals, the two companies will establish a joint venture focused on developing and producing cruise missiles and interception systems, including rocket artillery solutions. The initiative reflects the growing importance of long-range strike and counter-strike capabilities in modern warfare, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts such as the war in Ukraine. Rheinmetall stated that the joint venture would leverage systems already proven in combat, ensuring rapid development and deployment timelines. The move aligns with Germany’s broader rearmament strategy following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which has driven increased defense spending and industrial expansion. However, analysts have raised concerns about the concentration of funding among traditional defense manufacturers, suggesting a need to balance investment between established players and emerging high-tech firms. Despite this, Rheinmetall’s expansion into missile systems underscores its ambition to diversify its portfolio and strengthen its role in Europe’s defense ecosystem.
