India is exploring a landmark defence barter arrangement with Brazil that could combine the acquisition of Embraer’s C-390M transport aircraft with exports of Tejas Mk1A fighter jets and Akash air defence systems. The proposal is linked to India’s Medium Transport Aircraft program, which aims to replace its ageing transport fleet with 60 new aircraft. Under the concept, both countries would procure equipment from each other’s domestic defence industries, reducing direct financial costs while expanding bilateral defence cooperation. If finalized, the agreement would strengthen India’s defence exports, support technology transfer, and establish a new model for international defence trade, subject to engine availability, industrial participation, and operational evaluations.
