India’s Akash-NG air defense system has been optimized to counter large-scale cruise missile saturation attacks, one of the most demanding challenges in modern air warfare. Featuring an indigenous active RF seeker, a dual-pulse rocket motor, and an AESA multifunction radar, the system can engage multiple threats simultaneously while operating in electronically contested environments. The radar reportedly tracks over 100 targets and can engage more than 10 at once, while rapid interceptor launch rates allow the system to respond effectively to mass missile attacks. Integrated electro-optical tracking further improves resilience against electronic warfare. As part of India’s layered air defense architecture, Akash-NG is expected to serve as a critical inner-layer shield supporting longer-range systems such as the S-400 and future Project Kusha.
