The US Air Force is planning a communications upgrade for its HH-60W Jolly Green II combat rescue helicopters, replacing the existing Link-16 TacNet Tactical Radio with a multi-channel radio capable of handling simultaneous Link-16 and VHF/UHF voice communications. The service is considering L3Harris Technologies’ KOR-24A Small Tactical Terminal as a potential replacement for the current system produced by Data Link Solutions. The upgrade aims to provide improved cryptographic capabilities and expanded communication functionality that the existing radio cannot support. The KOR-24A terminal is designed to deliver Link-16 tactical data connectivity in a compact form factor while enabling secure voice and data communications across multiple channels. This capability allows rescue aircraft to maintain situational awareness with fighter aircraft and airborne command platforms while communicating with isolated personnel or ground forces. The HH-60W helicopter is based on the Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk and serves as the Air Force’s primary combat search-and-rescue platform. Compared with its predecessor, the HH-60G Pave Hawk, the aircraft features improved avionics, greater fuel capacity, and enhanced performance in high-altitude environments.
