A NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft has completed its first operational mission in Finnish airspace, marking a significant step in strengthening surveillance and command-and-control capabilities along NATO’s northern and eastern regions. The mission supported NATO monitoring operations across the high north and the alliance’s eastern flank. It was coordinated by NATO’s Joint Force Command Norfolk and carried out under the direction of Allied Air Command. During the operation, eight Finnish F/A-18 fighter jets participated in a training scenario involving a four-versus-four aerial engagement exercise. The AWACS aircraft served as an airborne command center, overseeing the scenario and managing the tactical air picture for participating aircraft. Acting as a battlespace management platform, the system monitored airspace activity and coordinated communication between participating units. AWACS aircraft play a key role in NATO operations by linking airborne sensors with ground-based command centers, allowing commanders to maintain a real-time overview of air activity across large operational areas. This capability improves situational awareness and enables faster responses to potential aerial threats. The mission also demonstrated the integration of NATO military assets with Finland’s national airspace management systems. The aircraft operated within Finnish civilian-controlled airspace while maintaining coordination with national air traffic authorities. Flight operations were conducted in cooperation with the Control and Reporting Centre in Rovaniemi in northern Finland as well as the Air Operations Centre in Jyväskylä. The mission highlighted NATO’s efforts to strengthen interoperability and coordination among allied forces following Finland’s accession to the alliance.
