India is undertaking a major effort to sustain and modernize its aging IL-76 strategic airlift fleet, which continues to play a crucial role in military logistics. With limited alternatives available, the Indian Air Force is extending the service life of these aircraft through structural upgrades, engine replacement programs, and avionics modernization. Challenges such as spare parts shortages, exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, have forced the IAF to adopt measures like component cannibalization. To address these issues, India is increasingly involving domestic private firms in maintenance and repair work. Plans also include upgrading engines to PS-90A-76 models and introducing glass cockpit systems to enhance efficiency and compliance. The goal is to maintain operational capability into the 2040s.
