The US Air Force has awarded BAE Systems a contract to modernize the electronic warfare capabilities of the U-2 Dragon Lady reconnaissance aircraft. The program focuses on sustaining and upgrading the AN/ALQ-221 Advanced Defensive System, which enhances the aircraft’s situational awareness and survivability in contested environments. BAE will provide ongoing field support, repairs, and software updates from its New Hampshire facility. The system integrates radar warning receivers, electronic countermeasures, and advanced processing capabilities, enabling the U-2 to operate effectively against modern threats. The aircraft, capable of flying above 70,000 feet, continues to play a critical role in intelligence gathering. The upgrade ensures the platform remains operationally relevant despite its long service history.
