The US Navy has identified four industry partners for an effort aimed at extending the operational usefulness of its MH-60 Seahawk helicopters well into the next several decades.Sierra Nevada Corporation, Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, Rockwell Collins, and Technology Security Associates have been selected to address different technical requirements. The work will cover aircraft integration, essential avionics, digital systems, and open-architecture validation.The initial stage is being managed by the H-60 Multi-Mission Helicopter Program Office alongside Australia’s Royal Australian Navy. Engineers will first establish preliminary designs for the aircraft’s flight-critical systems and digital infrastructure before preparing the helicopter for trials.Prototype construction and system verification are planned for the following phase. The Navy expects extensive use of digital engineering methods to improve development speed and reduce the time required for physical testing.Open-system standards will be particularly important because they can allow new sensors, computers, software, and other technologies to be introduced without completely redesigning the helicopter.This technology strategy could provide lessons for future vertical-lift aircraft that require frequent upgrades throughout their service lives.The Seahawk lineage began when the Navy sought a successor to the SH-2 Seasprite. Using the Army’s UH-60 as a foundation, the service introduced the SH-60B in 1984 before developing the modern MH-60 family.Today, the MH-60R is used for submarine and surface warfare, electronic warfare, and command functions. The MH-60S provides capabilities including mine countermeasures, special operations support, rescue missions, and anti-surface warfare.The current industry engagement is being conducted through an OTA mechanism under the Naval Aviation Systems Consortium. Final contractual arrangements will follow successful negotiations and completion of the required Phase 1 documentation.
