The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) showcased the JL-3 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) for the first time at Beijing’s Victory Day parade, marking a pivotal step in China’s nuclear weapons development. The missile, capable of striking the U.S. mainland from the South China Sea, represents a leap from the JL-2 with improved range, survivability, and multiple reentry warheads. Designed for Type 094A and upcoming Type 096 SSBNs, the JL-3 incorporates solid-fuel propulsion, advanced guidance, and MIRV capability, strengthening China’s sea-based deterrent. Analysts say its 9,000–12,000 km range and warhead flexibility place it alongside the U.S. Trident II and Russia’s Bulava, making China’s undersea nuclear force a global player.
