New Zealand is set to significantly upgrade its military aviation capabilities following US approval of a $1.5-billion sale of MH-60R helicopters and supporting equipment. The advanced rotorcraft are expected to improve the country’s operational readiness across a range of missions, including maritime security, anti-submarine warfare, and infrastructure protection. Alongside the helicopter package, the US State Department also cleared the potential sale of MK 54 torpedoes valued at $69 million, providing enhanced combat capability for the aircraft. The proposed acquisitions align with broader efforts to modernize New Zealand’s defense forces and strengthen interoperability with key international partners.
