Belgium has announced plans to deploy a NASAMS air defense battery at the Port of Antwerp beginning in 2027 to safeguard critical logistics and industrial infrastructure from aerial threats. Prime Minister Bart De Wever stated the system will protect roughly two-thirds of the port once operational. NASAMS integrates radar sensors, missile launchers, and a fire control network capable of countering aircraft and cruise missiles. Authorities also confirmed procurement of additional counter-drone systems following repeated unidentified UAV incursions near nuclear and chemical facilities. The move forms part of Belgium’s wider modernization program, which includes acquiring multiple NASAMS batteries, Skyranger mobile air defense vehicles, and Piorun man-portable missile systems to strengthen layered national air defense capabilities.
